Statement of
Significance:
The Old Gum Tree marks the supposed site of the proclamation of the establishment of government in the new colony of South Australia on 28 December 1836. Down the years there has been considerable debate as to whether this is the actual site. There is also a long-standing belief that the establishment of the colony was what was proclaimed, and the commemoration ceremonies which have been held since the 21st birthday of the colony in 1857 are often reported on by the media as if that is the case. In reality the colony was established and its boundaries set by Letters Patent issued on 19 February 1836. It is highly likely that the misapprehension arose from the heading of the broadsheet prepared in 1836. (HSA 11/00)
